Every January, we press pause on the day-to-day and intentionally step away from our desks, our job sites, and our routines. It’s a rhythm we’ve built into the DNA of Technical Elements, one that gives us space to reflect, plan, and reconnect with one another as people, not just coworkers.
This year, that pause took us just outside of Chattanooga to Alpine A-Frames, where 25 members of the Technical Elements team gathered to kick off the year with clarity, alignment, and purpose.
Starting the Year Aligned
We begin each year by meeting in our individual teams and then coming together as a full staff. This time allows us to reflect on where we’ve been, hear from our business coach, and cast a vision for the year ahead. It’s where goals take shape, priorities get sharpened, and expectations are clearly set.
For our directors, the retreat is also a critical planning milestone. Time away from daily responsibilities creates space to think strategically about the business, our people, and how we can continue to improve how we serve our clients.
Investing in Our People
When the full team joined the retreat, we stepped into an off-site session led by John Ott, focused on the Working Genius framework. These conversations help us better understand how each person contributes, communicates, and thrives.

The goal isn’t just productivity. It’s empathy, collaboration, and building teams that truly work well together. When people understand their strengths and the strengths of others, work becomes more efficient, more enjoyable, and more sustainable.
A Change of Place, A Change of Perspective
One of the biggest takeaways from this year’s retreat was simple but powerful: a change of place creates a change of perspective.
Stepping into the mountains, slowing the pace, and being surrounded by nature gave us space to think differently. It helped us zoom out, see the bigger picture, and return to our work with renewed energy and focus.
Including What Matters Most
On the last weekday of the retreat, we invited families to join us for the weekend: no work, no agenda, just time together. We hiked, shared meals, and spent time connecting outside of our usual roles.
As a business owner, this is one of the most rewarding parts of the retreat. Inviting families into this experience recognizes that behind every great team member is a life and support system that matters. When we care for the whole person, the impact extends far beyond the workplace.

Looking Ahead
This year reinforced an important lesson: next year, we’ll host the directors’ retreat six weeks ahead of the full-team gathering. That extra margin will allow leadership to come prepared with clearer direction, making our time together even more impactful.
Our January retreat sets the tone for the year. It grounds us in our values, aligns us around shared goals, and reminds us why we do what we do.
We leave refreshed, connected, and ready for what’s ahead, carrying with us the perspective that sometimes the best way forward starts by stepping away.
